2nd Place Amber/Ruby Mufasa Roulette Deck List and Guide

Few cards have such incredible potential in Disney Lorcana TCG that entire decks are named after them. Mufasa is one of those character cards. In this deck list and strategy guide, we’re going to be diving into the latest and greatest Mufasa/Ruby deck list and strategy that took second place at a major Lorcana tournament recently.

Lorcana Amber/Ruby Deck – Why Mufasa?

Mufasa – Betrayed Leader

At first sight, you might wonder what all the fuss around Mufasa is about. He doesn’t have the most fantastic of stats. However, at second look, you can see that Mufasa’s ability is what makes this card really special. The Sun Will Set’s ability reads as follows:

When this characters is banished, you may reveal the top card of your deck. If it’s a character card, you may play that character for free and they enter play exerted. Otherwise, put it on top of your deck.

It’s this ability to play any character for free when Mufasa is banished that makes him such a strategically important card.

Of course, to ensure that you always have a character card on the top of your deck, you need a deck that runs almost all character cards.

Mufasa Amber/Ruby Roulette – what’s changed in Into the Inklands?

Although most decks changed a lot after Into the Inklands, Mufasa Amber/Ruby hasn’t changed very much at all. The core strategy is consistent with where it was before. The only major difference is a few powerful new characters introduced in Into the Inklands and added to the deck.

Those two powerhouse cards are:

  • Prince Eric – Expert Helmsman

  • Hydra – Deadly Serpent

Mufasa Amber/Ruby Roulette deck strategy guide

This deck may be all about Mufasa, but it’s not the only character that matters. After all, you can’t actually play Mufasa until you have five Ink in your Inkwell. Until then, however, you still have plenty of options to play powerful characters.

To start, this deck runs two separate one-cost characters: Stitch and Minnie Mouse.

Stitch – New Dog

Stitch – Rock Star

Stitch is an effective character to play early in the game as you will be able to Shift him into his powerful Rock Star version relatively early on. Rock Star Stitch has everything you could ask for rolled into one – excellent draw support, high lore value, and strong Will Power.

While Stitch is an excellent choice to play early in the game because he can shift into the formidable Stitch – Rockstar later, Minnie Mouse can be very effective as well. First of all, she is able to survive many songs that Steel decks are likely to throw at you. Meanwhile, she can be used with Teeth and Ambitions to keep aggro decks off your back before you have a chance to pull ahead.

Minnie Mouse – Always Classy

Teeth and Ambitions

Teeth and Ambitions

Cost-five Queen is a great option for helping your characters clear your opponent’s board, positively trading challenges without taking damage or being banished themselves.

Meanwhile,The Lantern is your only non character card

Most decks run at least a few action cards or songs. However, the Mufasa Roulette deck is unique because it only runs characters except for two copies of the Lantern card.

Replace Lantern with Doc

Doc – Leader of the Seven Dwarves

Earlier versions of this deck used Lanterns as the only non character cards in the deck. However, you don’t really need Lanterns so much in this deck if you have the helpful Doc. Not only is Doc capable of reducing the Ink you spend on characters, he’s also got a helpful lore value of two, meaning you can rack up some decent points towards victory this way.

The real secret sauce from using Doc, however, is that he allows you to play Mufasa a turn early, which can be a real advantage.

Apart from enabling you to play more powerful characters than you have the Ink for in your Inkwell, you can use Doc to play multiple low cost characters more easily.

Play Mufasa and hope for the best

Once you get to the part of the game where you can play Mufasa (typically turns four or five – assuming you draw him), you can start getting into the core strategy of this deck. That strategy is to play Mufasa, quest with him or attack with him, and then enjoy getting a free character in play when it is banished.

This can be particularly helpful against the popular Ruby/Amethyst deck which likes to wipe the board of characters. If your characters are all banished by Be Prepared, you could theoretically refill your board thanks to Mufasa’s ability. And because you have almost no non character cards, it’s quite likely that for each Mufasa you have in play, you will have a free character played.

The two strongest character cards you could hope to play for free in this way are Maleficent – Monstrous Dragon and Lady Tremaine. Both cards are not only powerful in stats, they help you remain in control of the board by banishing your opponent’s characters when they are played.

Lady Tremaine – Imperious Queen

Maleficent – Monstrous Dragon

Minnie Mouse – Stylish Surfer gains lore unchallenged

Past Mufasa/Ruby decks ran several Evasive characters to help gain lore and counter opposing Evasive characters. However, this current deck does away with most of the evasiveness except for the tried-and-true Minnie Mouse – Stylish Surfer. For a three-cost character, she has a lot going for her, including being able to quest for two lore and being an absolute pain for your opponent to try and take out.

Minnie Mouse – Stylish Surfer

The Mother Gothel/Rapunzel combo

With now so many cards to choose from, it’s impressive when a particular card from The First Chapter remains pretty present across all decks that use its Ink type. Rapunzel is one of those cards. Her multifaceted ability that allows her to heal damage and draw extra cards has always been helpful, but it has a direct tie-in in this deck that also runs the withered Mother Gothel.

Mother Gothel – Withered and Wicked

Rapunzel – Gifted with Healing

Mother Gothel may have impressive stats relative to her cost, but that’s even more impressive when you factor in Rapunzel. Rapunzel lets you heal her up so she can take more challenges and win. Meanwhile, you benefit from guaranteed card draw given the fact Mother Gothel enters play damaged.
