Sword Art Online is Getting a New Original Animation Called “Unanswered/Butterfly”
If you thought news about the new RPG, Echoes of Aincrad, coming out of Bandai in July was a big deal, get a load of this: a brand new Sword Art Online animation has also been confirmed, and it’s going to be included along with the game as an original story as well as getting a very limited theatrical release in Japan
Titled Unanswered/butterfly, the film will take place on the first two floors of Aincrad where the main story for Echoes of Aincrad also takes place. While Echoes of Aincrad is all about letting new players create their own avatar and experience the world of SAO through their own eyes for the first time in the series’s history, you can expect some familiar faces to be joining us in Unanswered/butterfly – Kirito and Asuna have already been cast in the original animation, meaning you can really think about this as a brand new SAO adventure animation to accompany the main series.
While I know this is not the original major motion picture that fans have been pining about for years, it’s still a step in the right direction. With all of the incredible hype the series has been getting lately – new mangas, books, and now a big new RPG and animation – it feels like things are really heating up for the franchise and we will very likely be getting big news about the mainline anime and original motion picture soon.
Until then, here’s everything we know about the original SAO animation Unanswered/butterfly so far.
abec himself has created a brand new original artwork to promote “Echoes of Aincrad”
Before getting more into the freshly revealed trailer for the new movie, I have to show you this insane artwork put out by the original character designer for Sword Art Online – the legendary abec!
Echoes of Aincrad original artwork by abec
While clearly this original artwork is aimed at promoting the new game with a bunch of brand new characters not from the original Sword Art Online universe, it still contains both Kirito and Asuna – a heavy nod that both the game and the animation likely have a lot more to do with Kirito and Asuna than a game where you create your own avatar would have you think.
Indeed, the original promotional anime that comes along with the game has already had the voice actors for Kirito and Asuna confirmed as part of the cast, with both characters heavily featured in the trailer.
We’ll look at that in a moment. But first you just have to stop and stare in appreciation at this epic, never-before-seen original artwork from abec that encapsulates so much of the dramatic visual storytelling that makes Sword Art Online such a compelling masterpiece no matter what medium it is in.
“Unanswered/butterfly” trailer teases Kirito as the villain
With the original Japanese Voice actors officially cast in this animation (which reportedly will be over 100 minutes long) and the teaser trailer clearly showing Asuna and Kirito playing a huge role in the story, it’s very safe to call this a brand new addition to the Sword Art Online anime universe – even if only as a more minor short story. Here’s the official movie poster for the new animation.
Before watching the teaser trailer, however, I do have to warn you. Things may not be as they seem. In the trailer you are about to watch, Kirito is clearly depicted as potential villain for the story.
Kirito The Black Swordsman appears to be the villain in Unanswered/Butterfly
As I hinted at, the biggest twist to this new original narrative is that Kirito “The Black Swordsman” appears to be the villain at first glance. This is backed up by images from the game that show an orange cursor over his character – proof in Aincrad that a player is guilty of killing another player.

While that might seem outlandish or far fetched, watch the trailer and read the officially released blurb about the promotional video for yourself to get a better idea of what’s going on here.
“The world’s first full-dive VRMMO, “Sword Art Online” - commonly known as “SAO.”
What was supposed to be a dream world has turned into a death game where death in the game leads to death in real life.
Emilun and Rex, who knew each other in the real world, happen to meet again there. The two take refuge with the Map Research Team and learn how to survive in the world of SAO. However, one day they encounter a mysterious PKer (player killer) player known as the Black Swordsman. Emilun rushes to the scene and sees Rex with his head hanging in despair, and the Black Swordsman looking down on him.
The one who wiped out the entire research team was the Black Swordsman. Emilun and Rex meet the genius swordsman Asuna, and begin special training to defeat their comrades’ enemies. In a death game where even humans are fighting each other, what new beginning will they reach...?”
Again, at first glance this appears to be a pretty hefty divergence from what we know about the events that take place during the first two floors of Aincrad. Kirito certainly is never a wanton player killer in either the anime, the original light novels or the Progressive series that covers the occurrences during Kirito and Asuna’s first two years in Aincrad. The fact that Asuna is helping train Emilun and Rex to fight against Kirito is also some pretty insane stuff.
Is this some sort of alternate universe apart from the main Sword Art Online story, or has something happened to turn Kirito berserk?
The answer, it seems, is probably neither. Instead, it’s more likely that Kirito is being misunderstood as usual, and the new protagonists just assume he’s an evil player killer.
Kirito and Asuna are still heroes in the story
While the trailer and blurb paint Kirito as the villain, the “messages from the staff” section of the official website for the animation paint a different picture. Kirito and Asuna are instead described as heroes in the story.
“Kirito, Asuna and the others have become heroes in this world, but this is not just their story.”
This seems to imply that Kirito and Asuna will be playing supporting roles but still be good guys, despite how menacing the Black Swordsman appears in the trailer. Typical Kirito – always misunderstood, but always good at heart.
See “Unanswered/butterfly” in theaters
For those especially eager to see the new anime film, there will be a screening ahead of the Echoes of Aincrad release in July. Before you get too excited, however, these screenings are taking place in Japan so unless you happen to be there in April, 2026, you’ll likely have to wait to get your hands on a copy of the game to see it in theaters. Additionally, there’s a lottery system so even if you are in Japan you might not get a spot. Tough luck, but you’ll be able to watch the full thing for yourself when you get the game.
Unanswered/butterfly will also be made into a manga
Just in case you weren’t convinced about how big of a deal this new anime was, it’s not just being limited to a video game specific anime – it’s also getting further adaptations that extend into the world of manga. Indeed, the serialization for this new manga will begin in March, 2026 and be part of Japan’s most influential Video Game magazine, Famitsu. In typical Sword Art Online franchise form, you’ll be able to enjoy the Unanswered/butterfly story in many, many different mediums and hopefully scratch that overwhelming itch for even more original SAO stuff for the time being.
See some of the original artwork concepts below.
Again, just in case you needed any more convincing that Kirito and Asuna are going to play a major role in this story, look at that manga concept art. It clearly depicts Kirito and Asuna in their early Aincrad wear side by side along with two new characters we haven’t met before.
Undoubtedly this is going to be a fun and exciting new side story to further enrich that pivotal time in the two main character’s journey through the many floors of Aincrad!
Those interested can check out the first few pages of the manga adaptation via the gallery below. Although you’ll probably have to rely on fan translations to get this in English as I doubt there’s any plans to release this stateside.
More about Echoes of Aincrad
Finally – the game that this is all about. Echoes of Aincrad is the newest Sword Art Online-based RPG from Bandai that puts the player in the driver’s seat. The game is releasing on July 10, 2026, with preorders available now for PlayStation®5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam®.
