Relatively little is known yet about what’s actually going to take place in the next Progressive light novel, but this newly revealed cover gives us a clue.
Without spoiling anything major for those of us still catching up on the light novel series, Kirito clearly has retained his powers gained in Vol. 8. The way he holds his sword here and the slight strain to his eye make him appear to be staring at something – perhaps with his enhanced vision!
Meanwhile, in the background, Lind and Kibaou – ever at odds – appear to be fighting shoulder-to-shoulder against some unseen enemy. Given the shape of the shadow behind them, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is Morte. If not Morte, they are likely facing off against elven enemies from within the Forest Elf fortress (more on that in a minute).
And, of course, Asuna is poised directly behind Kirito, ready as always to come to his aid.

With Sword Art Online Progressive Vol. 9 already available in English, there’s plenty of opportunity to catch up on the story ahead of next year when the official English translation of SAOP Vol. 10 is likely to release.
That being said, the best source of information on what’s going to happen in Vol. 10 comes from the official book blurb:
“Responding to an urgent summons from informant Argo, “Something bad has happened,”
Kirito heads to Friben, the main district of Aincrad’s eighth floor. There, he is met by an unexpected person:
Klein—the curved sword wielder whom Kirito met and parted ways with on the first floor, “The Starting City.”
From Klein, Kirito learns of the plight of the two major clearing groups, ALS and DKB, and together with Asuna, Kizmel, and Argo, he sets out to resolve the situation.
Their destination is Sluva, the capital of the Kingdom of Kales-O, the land of the forest elves. A reckless mission begins: infiltrating the stronghold of the enemy forest elves!”
For the first time ever in Progressive, we’ll be seeing Klein! Kirito’s semi-sidekick has been noticeably absent from the story so far, even when other SAO favorites from the anime like Agil and Argo have already played a crucial role.
Beyond the introduction of Klein into SAOP, the exploration of floor 8, and an inevitable battle with the enemy forest elves, the events of SAOP Vol. 10 remain largely a mystery. Although given this freshly revealed cover art, I would not be at all surprised to see Kirito use some pretty crazy Civis Nocte (vampire kindred) powers to deal with the enemy elves.
Fans reading the original Japanese work won’t have long now to wait until release day. And given the recent success of SAO Light Novels in the Japanese market, you can expect SAOP Vol. 10 to be a big one over there.
Fans stateside, however, will have to wait until 2027 at the earliest to pick up the officially translated work.
