The Future of Lorcana Revealed at D23 2026: First Serialized Card, Collector Boosters, and More
What’s better than an Iconic Rare Lorcana card? How about an Illustrious Rarity?
Meet the new Illustrious Rarity – a Lorcana card so rare that only 23 of them are in existence. Announced today at D23, Lorcana’s first serialized card (that’s not a promo) will be making its debut in Into the Inkdark – a set scheduled for Q1 of next year. With a unique number ranging from 1 to 23 (in honor of the year Disney as a company was founded), serialization essentially makes each and every Maleficent – Biding Her Time Illustrious Rare card one of a kind. Without a doubt, this new rarity is going to be the mega chase card for the next era of Lorcana.
As you can see from the first spoiled Illustrious Rare, Lorcana is drawing on an oldie here: the original and powerful Maleficent from the very first Lorcana set ever: The First Chapter. Keeping in tradition with Disney’s history, the artist is put front-and-center here, with Kendall Hale’s name being printed almost as boldly as Maleficent’s herself.
As exciting as this new rarity is, there is a slight catch: you can only get this gorgeous new rarity in a special booster pack. That’s right: collector’s boosters are coming to Disney Lorcana!
What will the new Disney Lorcana Collector Boosters include?
Don’t get too excited, however: the Collector Boosters won’t be coming to stores near you until 2027. They’ll launch when the recently announced “Into the Inkdark” releases.
In them will be 12 foil cards – so you get a premium for what you pay. As if that weren’t enough, you get a higher chance of pulling rare cards. And, of course, a shot at landing that one of 23 serialized Maleficent cards.
According to Ravenburger’s website, the rarer the card, the more gorgeous the foil becomes, culminating in that Illustrious rare.
What is Into the Inkdark all about?
While we don’t have an official release date yet for this upcoming set, it’s slated for sometime in Q1 of 2027. Its theming has also been revealed via the following, villainous blurb.
“The time for scheming is now as villains emerge from the shadows. This will be their moment to shine.
In the depths of the Inkdark, one meticulous plotter is devising a most ambitious plan. With his corrupt cohort fanning the flames of ambition, this villainous hothead is intent on becoming Lorcana’s fastest-rising threat. Braving a perilous valley of giant glimmers and cavernous mines, you’ll attempt to siphon off enough of his power to prevent disaster.”
Given the set’s focus on Hades, it seems that he’ll play a big role in this set, alongside the obvious chase card that is the Maleficent – Biding Her Time.
D23 drops a smorgasbord of info on upcoming Lorcana sets
Clearly Lorcana is seeing good days. News of the TCG’s first ever serialized card isn’t the only thing that came out of D23 today. A delightful dish of spoilers, new information about upcoming sets, and more also dropped.
Hot Dog Mickey from Hyperia City
First, a new card was spoiled from the highly anticipated Hyperia City set that’s releasing on October 26, 2026. This Mickey Mouse – Best in Town can be seen generously serving up hotdogs from his hand within Hyperia City.
But that’s not the only card revealed from the set: we’ll be getting an Enchanted version of this card, as well as a bunch of other Hyperia City cards that were spoiled today.
Lorcana in 2027 and future plans
While we’ve already gotten into arguably the biggest news coming out of the D23 Lorcana panel (that being Into the Inkdark and its corresponding Collector Boosters), plenty more has been revealed from the upcoming sets, including teasers for the Cosmic Quest set coming in Q2 of 2027, and a first look at a tantalizing collector’s product that’s all about Beauty and the Beast.

Celebrating 35 years since the release of Beauty and the Beast, this special product will be getting its launch in October 2027. Yet despite the long wait, Ravensburger shared a look at some of the key cards included in this set. And they look great.
Those who have been fans of Lorcana for a hot minute will likely recognize many of these cards: they’re remakes of previously relesaed cards only in a whole new and very attractive style.
Disney Lorcana is getting a digital client
Lastly, Disney Lorcana is getting a digital client – meaning some day in the distant (or not so distant) future you will be able to play your favorite Disney card game virtually, probably from anywhere. Fans have been pining for a digital client ever since the earliest days of the game, back when Pixelborn was shut down – the original fan-made digital client that was (and still is only for other games) incredibly popular.
While the real fun of TCGs is to be had in shops and at competitions, or simply collecting with friends, adding a digital layer unlocks new experiences, opportunities to practice, and ways to extend the fun when it’s not weekly game night.
While these are the big highlights from everything revealed during the Disney Lorcana panel at D23 2026, there’s even more stuff going on. From events hosted on Disney Cruises, to Visual Guidebooks releasing, and overall a deeper integration with Disney as a company, it’s becoming clearer than ever that Disney Lorcana isn’t going anywhere. It really might have just enough Pixie Dust to soar to the top of the heap for TCGs, even as that world becomes more competitive and complex.
