Doomlings Nightflower Island Gold Box and Mokoko Village Expansion Review
The team over at Doomlings recently sent me a box of Nightflower Island Gold packs and the Mokoko Village expansion to check out, and I couldn't wait to dive in.
I’ve been a fan of Doomlings ever since I tried out the Doomlings base set. Since then, I’ve played countless games with my family.
So how was my experience opening and playing these two expansion sets?
Well, let’s dive in and find out.
First up, Mokoko Village Bolster Expansion
My favorite thing about any card game is how well it tells a story. More than any single Doomlings expansion I’ve played so far, the Mokoko Village expansion does the best job of creating its own world.
Playing through it really does immerse you into a world of quirky characters, misfits, forest spirits, and outcasts.
Not only does the expansion transport you to another world, it has plenty of fun mechanics, and a handful of gorgeous cards. My favorite looks-wise is the River Walk Age card.
Of course, this is Doomlings we’re talking about; it’s not all about atmosphere and game mechanics. It’s also about fun. And one of the cards that gave us the biggest laugh (even the youngest in the family got it) is this Low Mane trait.
Indeed, it’s in mixing quirky townsfolk like Low Mane with the druidic spirits of the forest that Mokoko Village really hits its stride.
Sundering is one of those spirits. This fearsome looking creature doesn’t look like it comes from the same place as Low Mane, and that’s what really makes this set work. It’s the combination of conflicting things that makes it almost feel weird enough to be a real place.
Who is Mokoko Village perfect for?
Mokoko is the ideal next set to buy if you’ve already picked up the base set and want a challenge.
What about the Nightflower Island Gold Box?
While Mokoko Village works because it conveys a single, cohesive story about one strange village nestled deep in the forest, Nightflower Island is doing something else.
Think of this box as a greatest hit album comprised of cards from several different expansions. Namely, it includes collectible holofoil cards from Shadow Puppets, Castle Glass, and Mokoko Village Bolster Expansions.
While these expansions have enough in common that opening these gold packs certainly is immersive, most of the fun just comes from pulling shiny cards and hoping for something rare.
