One of Pokémon’s Strongest Cards Gets a Reprint in 30th Celebration
Can you believe it: Pokémon 30th Celebration isn’t just about reprints of classic and valuable cards. It’s also about cards known to players. And today’s revealed Classic Collection card pays homage to one of the deadliest cards in modern Pokémon TCG history: Mew VMAX.
Mew VMAX dominated the Pokémon TCG since its debut
Sword and Shield was an incredibly fun era for the Pokémon TCG. With so many different three-prize attackers out there, there was a ton of variety – especially once the VSTAR mechanic got introduced.
That being said, when Mew VMAX came out, it felt like something out of the future. Its ability to draw, attack, and take prizes efficiently made it absolutely deadly upon release.
However, unlike many top-tier decks, new cards were released in an attempt to counter it – and they were never enough. Indeed, Mew VMAX was still winning Worlds right up until it finally rotated out.
That’s not to say it was unbeatable. Funny enough, one of my favorite memories of Mew VMAX was trying to qualify for the Pokémon TCG Team Challenge – a competitive-level event that was held via the online client. This was at the height of the Pandemic, and Pokémon was trying to give players a way to still compete despite being unable to host large scale events.
To get on the team, you had to outright win a local competitive event in person. After that, you would compete with players online from around the world.
And with Mew VMAX having released in Fusion Strike just a few months before, everyone was either running Mew, or teching against it.
This went well beyond the Pandemic era online battles, however. Mew VMAX was felt at virtually every level of competition from the day it came out until it eventually went out via rotation – essentially still undefeated.
