Sword Art Online Progressive Officially Returns this November With a New Release
Sword Art Online is having a huge year. With a hit new video game under its belt, several new books, and an anime movie announcement, the franchise is very much alive and well. Even though we’ve already had Sword Art Online Vol. 29 release this year, and a special new release entitled Sugary Days, 2026 is going to finish off strong with a major Japanese light novel release: Progressive Volume 10.
If you haven’t read Sword Art Online Progressive before, then you are sorely missing out.
Whenever I hear someone mention that Sword Art Online could have been great if only they had gone floor-by-floor through Aincrad, I always say “Why don’t you just read Progressive?”
Progressive complements the main Sword Art Online story by diving deep into the 2-year time skip we never get to experience in either the original source material or the books. During this time, Kirito and Asuna work together to clear the first floors of Aincrad, leaving in every little bit of detail fans have been pining for.
The Japanese book publishers for the series, Dengeki Bunko, have included Sword Art Online Progressive Vol. 10 onto their official release calendar for November, 2026. This means that we will likely get the English version of this book via Yen Press sometime in 2027.
Reading Progressive feels like taking a gap year with Kirito and Asuna
If you haven’t yet read Progressive, you definitely should. For the most part, the story feels like taking a gap year through Europe with Asuna and Kirito.
Not only does Progressive dive into the world of Aincrad in a way we never got to experience in the anime, it also explores the early stage of Kirito and Asuna’s relationship. Although in the anime they get together hard and fast, Progressive offers more of a slow burn.
Yes, there’s also plenty of fan service between the two, but Sword Art Online author, Reki Kawahara, himself says that he enjoys writing the scenes between Asuna and Kirito, especially since they are so often apart in SAO’s current arc, Unital Ring.
I specifically mention Europe because each floor of Aincrad we’ve been to so far is unmistakably themed after a different region of Europe.
For example, we spend an entire book on floor four – a floor that is undeniably themed after Venice. Kirito and Asuna spend a lot of time eating pizza and cruising in their gondola.
More recently, Progressive had one of its best arcs to date. In it we see Kirito and Asuna pull off a secret mission on floor seven which is made up of a massive casino.
This (and a bunch of other crazy stuff that I won’t spoil here) occurs in SAOP volumes 7 and 8, and they’re my two favorite books in the series so far. Volume 9 just released in English earlier this year, meaning those eager to dive seriously into Sword Art Online Progressive have all the material they need to catch up on the story before Vol. 10 gets its English release date.
Right now, we know very little about Progressive’s 10th volume. What will occur during its pages, what its cover will look like, and how far we’ll “progress” up the floors of Aincrad remain a mystery. Regardless, it’s exciting to see the franchise continuing strongly on all fronts, promising plenty more stories and content in the years to come.
