Sword Art Online Volume 29 Illustrations: an Early Look

Ready for a big Sword Art Online Light Novel spoiler drop?

Anticipation for the next vital installment in the Sword Art Online Unital Ring chapter has been building, especially since Volume 29 was announced earlier this year.

While the cover art for the volume was revealed at the end of February to much excitement, now we have a sneak peek at the Illustrations (by the venerable abec) within the light novels themselves. This is huge for those carefully following the developments of Unital Ring – the current ongoing Sword Art Online arc that has yet to be turned into an anime – as they grant the best look yet at what the volume is going to be all about.

There’s a lot to unpack here so let’s look at all of the illustrations leaked via the official broadcast and break down what they could mean for the story.

Asuna Unital Ring Casual

Asuna’s Unital Ring look without the battle armor

First up we have this preview of Asuna wearing what appears to be relatively casual athletic suit. From looking at the illustration on the back of the already revealed cover, this appears to be the same suit she is wearing while on the zipline.

This outfit appears to be her Unital Ring suit, just without the armor. Dropping the armor, however, makes it look like a much more generic uniform that could fit into a plethora of use cases – an interesting and relatively toned-down look for our often extravagant heroine.

The fact that Asuna is so prominently portrayed in the Volume 29 illustrations without her armor on makes me think there’s going to be plenty of more chill stuff going on outside of battles for survival. Asuna’s depiction on the Zipline on the back cover combined with her relaxed look signals fun adventure rather than just death-defying stunts in the next chapter of the story.

Speaking of death-defying stunts…

Kirito Asuna Klein vs monster

Kirito, Asuna, and Klein vs monster

That’s not to say there won’t be action. One illustration that really caught my eye is of this one featuring Asuna, Kirito and crew battling it out against yet another monster. As an illustration, this one gives off very similar vibes to the battle we saw between the Skull Reaper and Asuna/Kirito in an earlier volume.

Here, Asuna is clearly depicted in her gear, looking a little shook as the monster pictured in the frame appears to be getting the best of Kirito – similarly depicted in his Unital Ring gear. It’s fun to see Klein featured prominently in this illustration that’s clearly from the very front pages of the volume where the most heavily produced/stylized images from the light novels usually are.

Could this monster battle have something to do with the joining of Unital Ring and the Underworld – an event which has been teased for a long time now in the light novels? We’ll have to wait and see to know for sure, but clearly this battle has bearing on the rest of the story given the small bits of dialogue shown.

Back to the zipline…

Monster fights aside, Asuna isn’t the only one depicted enjoying the zipline experience: Kirito is also portrayed giving it a try for himself – and looking a little startled by the experience as Agil looks on.

More casual moments are depicted, like this apparent moment between Silica and Kirito.

While I’m really not sure what’s going on in this image, Silica clearly looks a little bashful yet confident with that one arm held behind her back but her face looking unashamed. Perhaps this has something to do with Silica’s relative growth as a more independently capable character through the Unital Ring story? Maybe she’s being entrusted with something important or even taking on a bigger role with the story? Clearly something is going on and Silica fans especially will undoubtedly enjoy whatever that “something” is.

Back to the Underworld drama

So far, all of the illustrations we’ve looked at from Vol. 29 have been pretty Unital Ring specific. However, this arc is really about three worlds: the real world, but especially Unital Ring and the Underworld. It’s been heavily implied that the two worlds would collide at some point in the story. With the introduction of Mutasina into the Underworld at the end of Vol. 28, in some ways this has already happened. Meanwhile, the cover featuring Eloyn next to a Unital Ring-clad Kirito further implies this collision course.

From the Illustrations we’ve seen so far, things are clearly heating up in the Underworld.

Alicization characters

The image above portrays the Unification Council Command Center filled with beloved characters (and one newer one): Alice, Selka, Eydis, Fanatio, Airy, Tiese, and Ronye. These powerful girls are looking very much like they are planning/prepping for something, while battle still looks far away given they haven’t donned their armor yet.

On the other side of the aisle, Mutasina, Istar, and the self-proclaimed emperor are depicted facing off Eolyn who appears to still be very much imprisoned.

While not explicitly stated by any means, the two images juxtaposed do appear to be signaling an impending confrontation between the two sides – an event which could imply a pretty huge battle given the apparent power of the two sides.

Who are these two new faces?

Unknown new characters

Two new faces join the cast in Vol. 29

While everything else we’ve seen so far has included familiar faces, two seemingly new characters stand out from the light novel illustrations. We don’t know who they are yet but they appear totally unrelated just by the looks of them. The one on the left holding the cakes might be someone associated with the dark territories while the one on the right looks very much like someone who might be aligned with Istar and the emperor given that posh military outfit

History of Underworld

Early look at updated “History of Underworld” from the upcoming Vol. 29

With the official release in Japan just mere weeks away (happening on April 10, 2026), excitement for the next chapter in the Unital Ring arc is heating up. From the early looks of things, this is going to be a very exciting story with plenty of light hearted, slice-of-life comic relief thrown in. Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to the official release!
