Sword Art Online Teams Up with Digimon in New Official Artwork
An official new artwork was created by original Sword Art Online illustrator, abec, to celebrate a new and unexpected collab.
The artwork features Kirito and Asuna carting their brand new Digimon pals along with them – Kirito with Agumon and Asuna with Gatomon.
Sword Art Online and Digimon may have more in common than you think
The collaboration commemorates the release of both Echoes of Aincrad, the latest Sword Art Online RPG that released on July 10, 2026, and Digimon Story: Time Stranger that saw its Nintendo Switch 2 release the very same day.
While this collaboration may seem a little bit random at first, there is one connecting thread: Bandai Namco. Bandai has a pretty sizable stake in Sword Art Online, serving as its primary video game publisher while essentially owning Digimon outright.
While that’s the primary connecting thread, more tangential ties also exist. For example, English voice over actors for Kirito and Asuna (Bryce Papenbrook and Cherami Leigh respectively) have both voiced different characters within the Digimon universe for the anime.
Thematically, however, there is also a unique tie-in, as both Digimon and Sword Art Online are stories about characters who leave the “real” world and enter the digital one. In both stories, protagonists have to deal with their new reality, overcome challenges, and have many adventures.
Indeed, the thematic correlation is so close in this regard that one Redditor actually predicted the inevitable crossover seven years ago.
So while the collaboration may seem unexpected, really it’s more of a match made in heaven.
