Latest Sword Art Online Novel Teases Integral Domain

If you’re as eager as I am about Sword Art Online’s officially announced upcoming theatrical film, Integral Domain, then you’ll also be glad for any signs of life that it’s actually real.

Well, Sword Art Online fans in Japan seem to get all the goodies: not only did they get an official light novel release of the acclaimed Sugary Days story today, fans are sharing that inside the book is a teaser for the upcoming film.

Sugary Days and Integral Domain

Sugary Days Novel

For Sword Art Online fans, the release of the legendary Sugary Days light novel is enough excitement. Chronicling events never seen in the anime, Sugary Days is a deep cut for hardcore SAO enthusiasts, especially those who are drawn to the story primarily for the Kirito/Asuna relationship angle.

While I’ve covered initial spoilers revealed from the light novel’s opening artwork, additional illustrations have also been leaked to the public just ahead of the book’s official release date.

Unfortunately for fans outside of Japan, they’ll have to wait for Sugary Days to come to them: no plans have been announced for the anticipated light novel to receive an English adaptation.

Integral Domain remains largely a mystery – for now

While it’s exciting to get a teaser like this within a new Sword Art Online book, such advertisements are hardly a new thing.

Indeed, in the Sword Art Online Vol. 29 that I special ordered there was a similar advertisement for the then unreleased Echoes of Aincrad.

I don’t know about you, though, but the prospect of a new Sword Art Online movie is even more enticing than a major video game. And while the project has been officially announced for a 2028 release date (a whole year later than what I had hoped for), at least its key visual and name have been revealed.

Apart from that, we don’t know a whole lot about the upcoming film, other than that it will be a brand new story never before adapted into the anime, light novel, or any other medium. This follows suit with the phenomenally successful Ordinal Scale film which was also an original work penned by Sword Art Online author, Reki Kawahara himself.

Apart from that, we know it will be a continuation of the story past the Alicization arc which was the latest arc adapted to the anime. Like Ordinal Scale, Integral Domain could serve as a bridge between the occurrences of that arc and the Unital Ring arc that comes afterward – a story that is already well advanced beyond the anime with nearly 10 volumes in existence.
