Looking for the top chase cards in Pokémon TCG Pocket: Ruler of the Skies?
Releasing on Wednesday July 29 at 6:00pm PDT, Ruler of the Skies set shares thematic elements with Japan’s Pokémon TCG: Storm Emeralda, as well as the upcoming Delta Reign which releases much later on November 6, 2026.
What thematic ties exactly? Well, the biggest one is this: they all focus on Mega Rayquaza as their central character.
Below, let’s take a look at each of the top cards from Ruler of the Skies to chase.
#1 Mega Rayquaza ex – Immersive Art is the top Ruler of the Skies chase card
Picking the top chase card from the set isn’t very difficult: clearly it’s this gorgeous Mega Rayquaza ex Immersive Art. Like previous Mega Pokémon ex alternate art cards, this Mega Rayquaza ex features its basic form in the artwork.
Here, Rayquaza can be seen almost swirling around the form of its more powerful evolution as it bears boldly down on some challenge. Beneath you can see the towering skyscrapers of the city below: essentially the same urban cityscape that was pictured in the teaser trailer for the set.
With so much Rayquaza to look forward to this year, Pokémon is certainly starting things off with a bang with a compelling artwork, even if it’s not nearly as solid as the breathtaking Special Illustration Rare the physical card game is getting.
#2 Typhlosion ex – Special Art Rare (Rainbow)
While it’s hard to compete with one of Pokémon’s most memorable characters, Typhlosion certainly tries. Entirely solo in what looks to be a mountainous region, this card’s appeal isn’t just nostalgia for the Johto starter: it’s the fiery energy in the foreground contrasting so strongly with the peaceful nature behind.
#3 Dragonair – Art Rare
This Dragonair caught my eye ever since the very first cards for Ruler of the Skies were revealed. Everything about this artwork works – from the pale blue glow surrounding the water scene to the light pink flowers drifting by, to Dragonair’s own serene form looking up in amazement.
It’s the kind of card that would move mountains in the physical TCG, and a well-placed nod to the draconic theming of this epic set.
#4 Mega Sharpedo ex – Special Art Rare (Rainbow)
While Mega Sharpedo may not be everyone’s instant favorite Mega form, this card’s art does a lot of heavy lifting for the Pokémon, bringing the scene to life with water effects interacting with a Pokémon in a way that looks totally real. In the background the sun is clearly setting with that soft red glow. This combination creates a visual masterpiece that raises the stakes in this particular Ruler of the Skies chase.
#5 Rotom ex Immersive Art
Rotom makes the list for being an Immersive Art card more than anything else. While I’ve not yet seen the full animation for this card, given the cityscape in the background, it feels like Rotom is thematically tied to the Mega Rayquaza Immersive Art, even if only just so.
#6 Mega Gardevoir ex – Shiny Super Rare
Gardevoir is always a favorite, and the chance to catch a Shiny Super Rare will drive many fans wild. It helps that Gardevoir’s alternate coloring in its shiny form is particularly eye-catching, propelling this Mega Pokémon to the upper tiers of this set. But honestly, it would be a contender in any set.
#7 Raichu – Crown Gold Art
Who doesn’t love Raichu? While not as instantly iconic as its Basic form, Raichu gets plenty of love for being Pikachu’s Evolution. This depiction of the tougher-looking mouse Pokémon is particularly cute, and its rarity grants inherent desirability into this nostalgic hit.
#8 Kyogre – Art Rare
Whoever designed Ruler of the Skies was likely looking at someone else’s homework at the Pokémon Company, as Kyogre is also going to be part of the upcoming Delta Reign set. Similarly, it gets an alternate art (Illustration Rare) in that set as well.
Yet it’s hard to match the majestic beauty of this legendary where it rests on the bottom of the ocean. You almost want to look away because it seems so at peace with being alone deep in the charming depths of the ocean.
#9 Mewtwo – Shiny
While all of these alternate full art cards are great, there’s something to be said about the more vintage look of this shiny Mewtwo card. While not likely to play much of a role in Delta Reign, Mewtwo does have a significant part to play in the upcoming Pokémon 30th set.
With that in mind, you could see a lot of already hyped collectors looking to pull this particular nostalgic chase.
#10 Swanna ex – Special Art (Rainbow)
In all honesty, there are so many intriguing, gorgeous, and cute cards in Ruler of the Skies that I could easily keep going for a while. But in the interest of keeping this list to the top ten, I have to highlight this Swanna ex. While not a popular Pokémon, this card paints a beautiful scene and is quite rare, making it one of the more beautiful chase cards you can get in the set.
