UNION ARENA: Every Black Clover Deck, Ranked
It’s been just about a year since UNION ARENA: Black Clover originally came out. And while there’s been no news of a Vol. 2 yet, with a new season coming out soon, perhaps we’ll get one eventually!
Until then, we’ll be taking an up-to-date look at every deck in the Black Clover UNION ARENA set, and ranking them from strong to strongest.
Of course, you’ll want to make your own adjustments to these decks. To make that easier for you, I’ve included links to the JWA Deck Builder so you can start theory crafting straight away using these lists!
#6 Yuno/Asta Green deck
Most UNION ARENA sets have their weak link, and the Asta/Yuna feels like Black Clovers. Still, there’s some fun mechanics here that reward you for a very low-to-the-ground play, with my favorite being the three-cost Asta.
For a three-cost Raid, Asta is very solid, becoming a 4000 BP character with Impact. As if that weren’t enough, I love this character’s passive effect that punishes your opponent’s Draw triggers – a very popular trigger to say the least.
At the end of the day, however, this deck lacks the right amount of aggression to qualify as a top-tier aggro deck, also resulting in its being one of the weaker Black Clover decks.
#5 Red Noelle/Mimosa Deck
While most will be excited about the Asta red deck because of its blatant power and early aggression, this red Black Clover deck featuring Noelle and Mimosa feels a bit scary. The deck it reminds me most of is the One Punch Man Psychic Sisters deck. However, this deck comes with more powerful characters, including the Raid Noelle capable of forcing a block along with 5000 and Impact – assuming you meet the required Event number threshold.
While Noelle brings the power, Mimosa brings the utility, letting you play your handy two-cost event cards for free if you want. This includes the unique Sea Dragon’s Lair – a card which can protect your characters from being chosen by opposing abilities.
While there are plenty of decks that focus on events, this one is one of the heavier-hitting. It may not matchup competitively so well, but it’s still a thrill to pull off its plays when you get the chance.
#4 Black Bulls
If you’re looking for a super original deck with mechanics that have never been seen before in UNION ARENA, then Black Clover Purple Black Bulls is definitely not the deck for you. Essentially, we have yet another affinity-based deck similar to Metal Bat or The Thirteen Court Guard Squads, or even Hashira before it. This deck is even complete with the likes of Yami Sukehiro who is essentially the same thing as the other two-AP 4000 BP removal characters found in the other Affinity decks we’ve had in UNION ARENA.
All of that being said, this deck isn’t without its own fair share of quirks. The most startling to me is perhaps Asta’s Raid – a character capable of nullifying Nullify Impact (is that even fair?). Additionally, there are quite a few powerful draw cards in the deck – something which originally made Black Bulls ahead of its time back when the set originally debuted.
#4 Purple Dark Triad deck
The Purple Dark Triad deck feels like a purple deck through and through, focused on getting cards into the sideline, and then using those cards to unlock effects. And while this deck does offer plenty of removal options through strategic BP reduction (think Byakuya from BLEACH), the really unique play is the “win game” condition enabled via Tree of Qliphoth. Manage to thin your deck out completely while still having the required number of Dark Triad cards on field and you just straight-up win!
While popular for its unique gimmick in the early days after its release, now it’s known mostly as a casual deck – not something likely to do well at high level competition.
#2 Green Vermillion deck
The Green Vermillion deck really packs a punch. A typical UNION ARENA green deck, you will be rewarded here for building up a solid energy line and playing powerful characters, rather than rushing early and often at your opponent. At the time of its release, Vermillion was one of the strongest green decks we seen, with the seven-cost Mereoleona having Impact 1 and Damage 2 right off the bat. Now, of course, plenty of decks have that as a staple, leaving Vermillion badly in the dust desperately in need of a Vol. 2.
Regardless, Yami remains a powerful character for this deck strategy, letting you sideline a raided card. Meanwhile, you also have access to a host of other strong characters, many of whom boost in power when granted added BP from your primary characters.
Manage to hit your curve and get these combos off and Green Vermillion starts to look like a scary deck. But it’s not fast or strong enough to be meta relevant with plenty of stronger options at the seven-cost energy threshold.
#1 Red Asta is the strongest Black Clover UNION ARENA deck
While Black Clover isn’t known for being the strongest of all UNION ARENA sets, it’s strongest contender in the UNION ARENA meta is Red Asta. While not exactly a meta staple, this deck does have street credits at the highest level of play. And that’s helped by the fact that we did get a new card to bolster it’s strength thanks to the three-cost Asta (available as a store tournament promo).
The focus of this deck is primarily on removal effects via the booster pack Asta – this deck’s strongest card.
While many choose to run a pure Asta build, I’ve always preferred to tech in Noelle as a secondary attacker. You might not get her Forced Block off all the time, but she’s a strong Impact character to compliment your deck strategy.
Again, while Black Clover isn’t among the strongest UNION ARENA sets of all time, Red Asta has the strongest chance of all of these decks to compete with the meta, and reliably sits in the upper-mid tier of decks. It’s not the most competitively dominant deck ever. But it can hang in there with the right pilot.
