Every Mega Evolution Prerelease Promo, Ranked
Ready to dominate the Mega Evolution prerelease event coming up soon? Well, lucky for all four of the prerelease promos will find in the Mega Evolution Build and Battle Box at a prerelease near you have been officially revealed by the Pokemon Company.
But which is strongest? How should you cater your deck building strategy to what you find? Below, I’ll be ranking each of the Mega Evolution prerelease promos from good to great, while also providing more than just a few deck building tips to help you know where to get started at your event!
#4 Meganium
It actually hurts a little to put Meganium at the bottom of this list as this is the card perhaps above all others that I’m actually most excited about from Mega Evolution. While the “Wild Growth” ability is going to be a must have in many grass decks, it may not be such a decisive one in the prerelease format. While you could get a grass type Pokemon capable of leveraging “Wild Growth” to unlock considerable damage (such as the Exeggutor getting released in this set), ultimately Meganium’s 140 damage inducing “Solar Beam” attack doesn’t really justify running Meganium as a main attacker.
How strong this prerelease promo will be is almost entirely dependent on what cards you get included in your kit or pull from your boosters, hence the reason for it being ranked the lowest despite being a very good card in the standard format.
#3 Lunatone
My gut tells me Lunatone is going to be a key card in the Mega Evolution prerelease format. While it’s impossible to be sure as we don’t know what the Build and Battle kit comes with, assuming we get a Solrock along with the Lunatone, then you have a powerful combo of the Lunar Cycle draw engine with Solrock’s attack – one that does 70 damage for a single fighting energy.
One pitfall here could certainly be a relatively poor matchup spread. Going into Alakazam you will be facing down a -30 resistance to your attacks, while any grass deck will be doing double damage. That being said, in a stage 2 heavy format, the Lunatone/Solrock combo could be fast enough to get under your opponent before their big stage 2 Pokemon come online.
#2 Inteleon
While Inteleon may lack the built in draw effect that makes the #1 Pokemon on this list shine, it’s still a solid attacker – one capable of swinging for 110 damage (a decent stat in the prerelease format) while also boasting a powerful knock out effect that could be very handy depending on the board state.
If your opponent happens to pull a powerful Pokemon ex (such as a three-prize Mega Evolution), you could feasibly ease up the math by bringing their HP to a manageable chunk, then using Bring Down for an instant KO.
#1 Alakazam
Build up your hand, evolve Alakazam, draw three card and then attack for 20 damage per each card in your hand!
Alakazam feels like the strongest prerelease promo at face value. Its combination of attack power with built-in draw effect make it a huge menace in a format that typically lacks that kind of all-in-one solution from a single attacker. Indeed, this Alakazam’s only drawback is the fact that it is a stage 2, making it comparatively slow to evolve. However, given three-out-of-four of the prerelease promos are also stage 2, it should fare well in an evolution-focused prerelease.
