‘Integral Domain’: New Sword Art Online Original Movie Announced for 2028
Sword Art Online fans rejoice! The long-awaited official announcement for the next Sword Art Online original movie has finally been made! The next Sword Art Online theatrical release will be Integral Domain and it is coming in 2028.
At this point in time, very little else is known about the film other than that it will be an entirely new and original work, much like how the acclaimed Ordinal Scale was a completely new plot never before seen in the original Light Novel source materials.

Also as was the case with Ordinal Scale, Integral Domain is created by Sword Art Online author and creator, Reki Kawahara, meaning we can expect the same kind of top-notch storytelling we received in the last original film.
A-1 Pictures/Psyde Kick Studio will be handling the animation production, and Shingo Adachi – who also worked on Ordinal Scale – will be directing the film.
What does Integral Domain refer to?
Right now, very little is known about the upcoming film other than what I’ve written above. However, the concept art does give some clues, as does the name. Above, we see Kirito and Asuna in all new outfits not seen before in the film. Perhaps even more telling is the floating fortress behind them: clearly a direct allusion to Aincrad.
It’s quite possible, therefore, that the new film will have something to do with one of the series’ most beloved arcs: the original Aincrad arc.
Additionally, Integral Domain could be referencing the Integral Factor video game: a “what if” story that sees you changing the story of the original Aincrad Arc.
While Sword Art Online fans will no doubt be excited to hear news of the original film finally being released, they still will have to wait as much as another two years for the project to see the light of day. Given the film was originally announced nearly four years ago in 2022, that’s quite some delay.
But given how cool this new film is shaping up to be, I’m sure it will be worth the wait.
Integral Domain Teaser Visual revealed
A teaser visual for Integral Domain has also been revealed via the official Sword Art Online X account, sharing more details and hints as to what the upcoming film will be about. The most interesting nuance included in this teaser is the dividing line between the artwork. To me this symbolizes some sort of break or distortion in reality/the virtual world, and it could tie into the alternate timeline aspect we saw in the Integral Factor video game.
Update: July 6, 2026
According to Sword Art Online author, Reki Kawahara, the title for this film was created by him, and bears no connection to the Integral Factor video game. Kawahara states that “what it means will be revealed in due time…”
We’ll just have to wait and see what this “Integral Domain” is all about!
