Mega Absol ex card breakdown
At face value, Mega Absol ex has a lot going for it. A basic Pokemon with 280 HP is already a pretty big advantage. Meanwhile, the attack that really makes Mega Absol ex stand out is the Terminal Period attack. Terminal Period enables one-hit-knock-outs into opposing Pokemon –an insanely powerful play in the era of Mega Pokemon ex.
In order for Terminal Period to work, you will have to have exactly six damage counters on the opposing Pokemon. However, that’s not exactly tough to do when you have both Toxtricity and Munkidori around.
Toxtricity serves the dual purpose of accelerating the energies you will need to use your attacks while also putting damage counters onto the Pokemon. This damage can then be strategically moved onto your opponent’s Pokemon to enable to powerful Terminal Period attack.
Take more knockouts with Roaring Moon ex
My favorite thing about pairing Mega Absol ex with Toxtricity is that it enables you to run Roaring Moon ex as a secondary attacker. I’ve totally missed this guy in the meta, and Roaring Moon ex is actually a pretty solid attacker in the current landscape. Again, just like how Mega Absol ex gets bonus points for taking one-hit-knockouts versus three-prize Pokemon, Roaring Moon ex fulfills the same thing, albeit with different trade-offs.
On the one hand, Frenzied Gouging is easier to get off. It just requires three energy as opposed to moving damage around to hit that exact six number that Mega Absol ex needs. On the other hand, Roaring Moon ex does almost lethal damage to itself in the process. While that won’t be an issue into certain matchups, it could be a problem into others.
Finally, it’s worth mentioning that Frenzied Gouging – while the main reason to run Roaring Moon ex in this deck – isn’t the only attack at his disposal. It does also have Calamity Storm which it can use in a bind.
Secondary attackers in this Mega Absol ex
While we’ve already talked about this deck’s main secondary attacker (Roaring Moon ex), there are two other attackers worth mentioning.
Brute Bonnet is another heavy hitter. While it’s going to be a little tough to hit that three energy requirement, having one or two Toxtricity in play makes that a lot easier. Get Brute Bonnet fully powered up and it has the potential to hit some insane damage, even taking OHKO against the biggest Pokemon. This combined with it being a single prize Pokemon means unlocking a powerful prize trade move that makes including it worth while.
Meanwhile, Yveltal is a more technical attacker who can be good in niche cases, such as locking down a Pokemon early on, placing a small amount of damage on it so that it can be more easily knocked out with Mega Absol ex’s attack.
Of course, you also have the Budew for early game item lock – still a standard and strong play in the current meta.
Mega Absol ex deck supporter card choices
The most complex aspect of the Mega Absol ex/Toxtricity deck is its retinue of attackers, and learning when to use them and why. Past that, the other card choices are pretty straightforward, and that includes the supporters this deck runs.
Arven works in this deck to improve consistency by letting you find the items you need when you need them. At the same time, you run several Pokemon tools that are handy to grab.
Lillie’s Determination is just a solid staple in the Pokemon TCG right now, generally taking Professor’s Research as the preferred draw supporter thanks to its ability to let you see more cards without the drawback of discarding.
Iono for hand disruption and draw.
Boss’s Orders to gust up desirable attack targets.
Mega Absol ex/Toxtricity deck strengths and weaknesses
The Mega Absol ex/Toxtricity build is a solid alternative to the more staple build that’s taken the Pokemon TCG meta by storm. It does particularly well into Mega Pokemon ex decks where it can take three prize turns with relative ease. Where it is weaker, however, is into more aggressive, smaller decks where you’ll have to do more work for your prizes.
