More Than 14,000 Players Signed Up to Beta Test Echoes of Aincrad Sword Art Online Game

Echoes of Aincrad, the upcoming Sword Art Online RPG from Bandai, has really struck a chord with fans: more than 14,000 concurrent players were clocked playing the game today in its early beta test/demo mode – up nearly 2,000 from the peak of the initial demo day. While the game’s official release is still weeks away happening on July 10, 2026, fans are clearly stoked to get their hands on the game that dropped a demo version via Steam on June 15, 2026.

These 14,000+ players who are already giving the beta test a try are going to be the game’s real “Beta Testers” or “beaters” as they are not-so-affectionately known in the Sword Art Online universe. Kirito, the main hero of Sword Art Online for the uninitiated, was a beater himself, and the opening missions you undertake in the Echoes of Aincrad gameplay are all part of the Beta testing arc, making it eerily relatable to players. And just like in the anime, players who take part in Echoes of Aincrad’s beta test will retain their saved data from the beta, and thus have something of a head start compared to the newbies who join on July 10, 2026.

With the demo rolling out beyond just Steam to Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, you can bet even more players are going to try their hands at surviving Aincrad’s lower floors.

Echoes of Aincrad is a gritty take on Sword Art Online

Echoes of Aincrad offers a very true-to-the-lore experience for Sword Art Online fans, while being approachable enough for those new to the franchise, too. As a devoted Sword Art Online fan, however, my favorite part of the demo was getting to meet and interact with Argo – a character who is already working on her information guides even at this stage in the beta.

Argo being in the beta is true to the source material as she was not only instrumental to the front line players called “clearers” but a beta tester of the Sword Art Online game, too.

She’s very similar to what you’d expect her to be based on the books and anime. However, she’s the only existing character that I recognized from the demo, with the core cast being net new characters.

Although I’ve played several RPGs before, the game that Echoes of Aincrad immediately reminded me of the most was The Witcher 3. It’s got the same kind of gritty realism – something which is truthfully a bit unique given the source material. Playing through the game certainly offers a different perspective of what it must have been like to be one of the original Sword Art Online beta testers.

Yet despite the grittier detail, the game very much follows the same mechanics of the original Aincrad, including the kind of boss quests and dungeons that we experience more frequently in the Progressive books and movies.

Get a literal Nerve Gear if you stream your gameplay

On a slightly different note, I thought I would highlight one quirky little Echoes of Aincrad tidbit I came across via the official X account for the Sword Art Online video game series. Apparently, you can get a physical Nerve Gear if you join the “clearers” group.

These “clearers” – a direct allusion to the source material – are tasked with streaming their take on the more difficult modes of Echoes of Aincrad. While the Nerve Gear won’t necessarily transport them body and soul into the virtual realm like it does in the anime, it will serve as the streaming equipment that they will use when playing through the game.

Echoes of Aincrad’s launch is already off to a great start with plenty of excitement and enthusiasm from players. It’s only the tip of the iceberg of what we’re likely to experience from the franchise this year, so SAO fans hang tight and check the blog often for the latest updates!
