UNION ARENA: Every That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Deck, Ranked
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is the first Special Booster set for the UNION ARENA English version: one that includes all cards from the Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, as well as little extra. Below, we’ll be ranking each and every deck from the set with the new English exclusive cards taken into consideration.
#8 Kijin
Yellow Kijin is a slightly odd deck. Everything is very low energy and it focuses primarily on free-playing characters, switching opposing characters to resting, and just swarming them down. It’s not a deck I see well going into the current UNION ARENA meta that’s so snipe heavy, but it could have some solid matchups into the more top heavy decks like Kaneki or Shadow Army.
#7 Rimuru/Diablo
Rimuru/Diablo is really, really close to being a top tier deck. All it’s really missing is powerful free-play character and it would be set. As it is, it’s still a solid option for players looking for that holy grail Snipe/Impact combo that’s running the meta right now. Into the Rare Battle, you could see this deck doing substantially better assuming it doesn’t get outpaced by the likes of the powerful Blue free-play deck that tops this list.
#6 Rimuru & Shion
Blue Rimuru/Shion is a fun deck but it definitely lacks some power. While it does benefit like all the Blue Rimuru decks from the addition of the fake two-cost, ultimately this deck just asks a little too much for what it delivers. Just as an example, look at the Raid Shion.
The main problem with this card here that stands out to me a bit as an eyesore is the pay an AP to unlock Damage 2. That was an insane ability almost two years ago when UNION ARENA came out. Now it just looks sort of unappealing to players who really want to leverage that valuable AP for something else. Still, it’s got decent removal capabilities and enough aggressive power to swing a few games in its favor, landing this deck in the upper mid-tier range of decks.
#5 Hinata/Luminos
Hinata/Luminous is another deck that actually feels pretty strong. It’s lacking a little in the removal department but makes up for that with some solid free-play effects off of the five-cost Luminus. Also, Luminus has the potential to boost to some insane damage output while also forcing your opponent to block her if they don’t want to take two or more damage in a single swing. However, joke’s on them because blocking also unlocks advantages for you.
All-in-all Hinata/Luminus is a tanky, heavy-hitting deck that could be a thrill to play. The free-play off the Luminus certainly makes it more modern than many decks in its power range, and in the right hands it could be fairly deadly.
#4 Rimuru/Veldora
The Rimuru/Veldora deck is actually pretty sick. It’s a deck with a ton of free play natively in it – although that free-play is going to cost you just a little bit. However, you r strongest free play character can activate a looping free-play effect turn after turn.
This makes five-cost Rimuru very dangerous, especially when combined with four-cost Veldora. Forcing the Impact/forced block into the four-cost Veldora is a classy move – one that’s pretty tough to stop unless you happen to have a Nullify Impact character handy.
Although simple and straight-the-point without an infinite amount of power, the removal/control plays combined with the built-in free-play mechanics make this a deck that could easily take your opponent by surprise.
#3 Milim
The Milim deck looks like so much fun. And although it may not be a high tier deck for competitive play based on its performance overseas, Milim is an absolute monster of a character, building up to her strongest removal Raid which sidelines an opposing character and bounces one to the hand. This unlocks some insane board control if you can hit her ultimate numbers.
If you’re looking to spice things up a bit, why not try adding the English Exclusive Special Trigger Milim to your deck? She may be 2 AP but she counts as energy on your front line and is difficult to get rid of.
Milim builds up to a powerful strategy that those go-big-or-go-home kind of players will enjoy. However, it’s powerful plays leave much to be desired in the way of utility, making this a more niche option than necessarily meta powerhouse.
#2 Team Reborn
Team Reborn is a neat little deck that benefits greatly from the inclusion of the four-cost Shion English exclusive card. This deck is all about unlocking a bunch of character abilities that do everything from free play characters, to search, to even effects that sideline characters on your opponent’s board. It’s not the most powerful UNION ARENA deck ever. But it’s well rounded enough to compete with the current English meta, and maybe even squeak out a few wins here-and-there.
#1 The Blue Free Play Deck
The Blue Free Play deck feels sick. Everything is playing powerful characters for free. Your two AP-cost Rimuru is playing something for free. Your Raid is playing something for free. Even your two energy-cost Report Event is playing something for free. And this gets infinitely better thanks to the two-cost fake zero-cost Rimuru which you can use to fulfill many of your 4000 BP character requirements. In Japan, this deck is already strong. With the addition of the exclusive English card, it becomes an S-tier potential deck in the UNION ARENA English meta.
While Rimuru plays a huge role in this deck (as in most of the decks from this set), Soei is the real star of the show. This guy’s un-blockable by high BP characters, and acts as a powerful free play character that you can use to play any of his Raid targets out from under him set to active.
And while the Raid Rimuru is solid for sidelining low BP chump blockers, the other Raid works well for switching your many free-play characters to active when Rimuru attacks.
With just the right amount of agro, free-play and power, this deck is going to be very, very strong in the English meta, and a favorite from the set for competitive players.
The strongest deck by a decently wide margin in this set is the Blue Rimuru/Soei deck. The rest are decently mid-to-upper-mid tier. All-in-all, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a slime is not the strongest UNION ARENA set we’ve seen, and looks a little older generation compared to the likes of Solo Leveling or even SAKAMOTO DAYS. Yet, with the firepower these decks got from the exclusive English cards, they should fare much better than they otherwise would, and you can expect to see Blue doing some impressive things at the top tables of competitive play.
