The Light Novel will be releasing in Japan in August, while an English release date is not yet announced. The artwork is a gorgeous representation of Kirito and Asuna’s relationship days – “Sugary Days” is a story about their earliest days of their marriage, and it’s something of a deep cut among hardened SAO fans.

Yet, the strong bond between Asuna and Kirito is a major pull for many fans of the franchise, making this wedding-themed cover art a perfect way to celebrate the Light Novel.

The sweetest episode in SAO history, depicting Kirito and Asuna’s newlywed life, has been released!

Sugary Days

‘Sugary Days’ takes place during Kirito and Asuna’s honeymoon after their wedding in Aincrad, filling in some of the gaps we don’t get to see in the anime. But this book isn’t just about filler: some of the events in this short story do impact the main SAO timeline as well.

As highlighted in the book preview:

The sweetest episode in SAO history, depicting Kirito and Asuna’s newlywed life, is finally revealed to the light of day!

But the story doesn’t end there.

’You know...I’d like to have a rocking chair custom-made,’

Kirito and Asuna visit Mahokuru, a skilled woodworker player, to fulfill the young wife Asuna’s wish, but this leads them into an unexpected situation...
— 'Sugary Days' blurb

The rocking chair event shows back up later in the Unital Ring arc, helping the story come full circle. In Unital Ring, Kirito gives Asuna a present for her birthday that is a direct reference to a wooden chair that they have made for their cabin in “Sugary Days”.

Of course, the rocking chair also acts as a symbol of the steadfastness of the bond that exists between Kirito and Asuna. It’s as much a metaphor for their love as is the log cabin that becomes a focal point for the story in later seasons.

While no official plans have been announced for an English adaptation of the Sugary Days Light Novel, many fans are hoping one will be announced soon. Until then, stay tuned for more Sword Art Online updates!
