UNION ARENA: Every 100 Girlfriends Deck, Ranked
UNION ARENA: 100 Girlfriends is here and it comes with a host of fun strategies to try. While most think of this set as one aimed at collectors, its decks are not all too shabby. Indeed, several have modern mechanics that make them feel relatively versatile into the UNION ARENA English meta – if not necessarily overwhelmingly the strongest.
Below, we’ll be looking at each and every deck coming out in 100 Girlfriends and ranking them from weakest to strongest.
#6 The Rentaro Family
Let’s start this list off with a deck that’s perfectly themed to this set. Indeed, if you are looking for a real 100 Girlfriends flavored deck that runs Rentaro himself, then this is the deck for you. Ultimately, it’s all about using various “girlfriends” to power up the strongest Rentaro character into a Damage 2 Impact 1 character.
Rentaro pairs well with the four-cost Karane as you’ll be able to switch him to active to send him on the attack the very turn he is played.
However, getting Rentaro to full power requires every single one of your unique card names on the field at once. To give you some other options I’ve attempted to build this also around the very strong Hakari Raid. But even with that tech, doing so much work for a simple Damage 2 Impact 1 character makes for a relatively poor game plan. As a result, not only is the Rentaro’s Family deck the weakest in the set: it’s also among the weaker UNION ARENA decks generally.
#5 Hazano Family
Hanazono Family is a quirky deck. And that’s not necessarily a good thing for its competitive prospects. Indeed, the strangest thing about the deck is the seven-cost Hahari: a card who offers very little value outside of searching out Hakari and switching characters to active When Attacking. That’s a lot to ask of a card worth seven energy – even with the reduction you get from your five-cost Hakari.
That being said, this deck does have one undeniably strong card that the other yellow decks in the set can’t include so easily: the six-cost Hahari Hanazono.
Hahari comes in active and lets you free-play your Hakari characters. That’s pretty nice, especially when you factor in the cost reduction you get from your five-cost Hakari. Yet the rest of this deck is pretty lacking in several core areas, making it one of the weaker decks in 100 Girlfriends despite the strong free-play mechanic bundled into Hahari.
That being said, it does also have access to this very cool Special card that lets you do multiple things at once – including sidelining a character and re-standing an AP, boosting BP, or even drawing additional cards, making it one of the stronger Specials we’ve seen at just five-cost and two-AP.
#4 Kusuri & Shizuka
If you really want to commit to the low-cost mechanic found in the 100 Girlfriends green energy color, this deck represents that play the most purely. It’s got the ability to boost the BP of characters, gain Impact, remove opposing characters via Raid Shizuka, and also has plenty of abilities to leverage via its Event-focused wheelhouse. However, you’ll likely find these characters oddly do better when paired with Nano rather than each other thanks to her Raid’s powerful free-play mechanic. Although a hybrid of all three could also be interesting.
#3 Hakari & Karane
Hakari/Karane is a straightforward, low-cost removal deck, with your primary character being the powerful four-cost Raid Karane.
Like most four-cost heavy-removal characters, however, Karane’s When Played removal effect does come with some drawbacks. However, her particular drawbacks aren’t the absolute worst we’ve seen from similar characters: she just enables your opponent to draw a few cards.
Hakari is Karane’s very well-rounded supporting Raid character.
She really does have just about everything you could want from this kind of a character: Impact 1, Nullify Impact, and the handy draw and filter effect.
The other interesting option for this deck build is a Special that unlocks a few different choices for you.
Tsundere works either as a 4000 BP removal tool, or as a Damage 2 Impact 1 boosting effect to make your Karane a powerful game-closing threat.
To make things even more fun, I like this Event card called Kara-pult & Hurl-kari that further extends the deck’s removal capabilities even further.
This card works well when paired with this deck because your Special is limited to just 4000 BP characters. While that works in most situations, you can use the Kara-pult Event in tandem with two-cost Shizuka to take out higher BP characters.
As fun as all this stuff is, however, I can’t pretend that it makes this deck “excellent.” Indeed, the lack of a AP-reducing card or free-play mechanic limits this deck’s competitive potential compared to what it could be.
#2 Nano & Shizuka
It’s been a while since we’ve had a deck focused specifically around three-cost-or-less characters, with the most memorable one being the Yellow Kikoru deck from Kaiju No. 8. The Nano/Shizuka deck relies on this mechanic, and delivers some impressive rewards for having plenty of three-cost characters on the field.
The strongest of these low-cost characters is the Shizuka Raid.
Shizuka has the very powerful effect of bouncing an opposing character to the hand, provided you meet the required number of three-cost characters on the field. Not only does this work as partial removal, she can’t be blocked by a character with an energy cost of 4 or higher – a first for UNION ARENA English Version.
Of course, the deck is greatly helped by the Raid Nano – a character that will reduce the AP of the next three-cost card (or less) you use from your hand this turn by one. That’s a strong free-play effect in any deck, made only more so in a deck built around three-cost characters.
Lastly – 100 Girlfriends is trying to solve the Green Color Trigger problem!
Not only does the three-cost Nano fulfill your three-cost character threshold for your Shizuka Raid, during your opponent’s turn your Green Color Triggers actually become good, letting you you draw a card and free play any character from your hand as long as you have the required energy.
With the free-play and low-cost bounce effects, this is one deck to watch. However, it lacks the upper-end power needed to be competitive in the upper tiers of the UNION ARENA meta.
#1 Kusuri & Nano
I’m not going to lie: the Kusuri & Nano deck looks pretty sick. My favorite combo from the deck is that of this deck’s Special card that grants Snipe into the three-cost Yakuzen that essentially becomes a Snipe/Impact character (we all know how good that combo is).
And while this combo may bring the power, it’s Nano who brings the utility.
Nano is quite powerful as a Raid. You’re going to use Nano to draw a card, free-play a three-cost card, and even get some additional filtering when she attacks. Having the Nano alone makes this deck the most capable of reaching the upper-tiers of the UNION ARENA meta.
You can also use Kusuri’s four-cost self to unlock the Snipe Impact combo, although the Raid character is even more reliable.
While both of the Nano green decks have merit, this one feels like it has the strongest chance of actually taking down a tournament.
