How to choose the right Lorcana deck to play

How to choose a Lorcana deck to play

There’s a ton of discussion around what the best Lorcana decks are. However, considerably less attention is devoted to choosing the best Lorcana deck for you. The best Lorcana deck for you isn’t necessarily just what is doing well in the meta. You have to take additional things into consideration like your play style, your budget, and what you’ve had time to practice for before you can just buy a list online and run with it.

In this guide, let’s go over how you can go about deciding on what deck to pick from all the options out there.

What is your playstyle?

Perhaps the most important way to go about picking a Lorcana deck to play is knowing your own play style. It’s much easier to go about playing a deck that fits how you like to play than trying to fit yourself to a deck that works differently.

When it comes to knowing your playstyle in Lorcana, there are a few key things to take into consideration:

  • Do you like fast decks? If so, you might really like Aggro decks.

  • Are you really patient? If so, a control deck like the super popular Ruby/Sapphire deck might be a better option. With this deck you need to carefully build up your resources for a powerful late game.

  • Do you really like banishing characters? I’m guilty of this one: I love clearing the board of characters. If so, decks that rely heavily on Steel like Steelsong could be a really good fit.

  • Are you big on defense? If so, Sapphire/Steel could be a good option. It’s focus on Resist via Cogsworth grants powerful defensive abilities to your characters.

  • Last but not least, maybe you’re just a well rounded player? If so, you can’t really go wrong with Ruby/Amethyst Bounce Control.

What do you have money for?

Lorcana (like most TCGs) is an expensive hobby. But it doesn’t necessarily have to be. If you have tons of disposable income to invest in your deck, than feel free to build whatever deck you want. However, if you are on a budget, you might be glad to know that you can still play comepitive on the cheap.

For more info on how to get started with that, take a look at our Lorcana budget decks.

It’s also perfectly alright to make substitutions if you don’t want to buy the most expensive cards you see in lists. I frequently use cheaper alternatives when possible, like using Donald Duck – Perfect Gentleman in my Beast – Relentless Deck instead of the more popular Tragic Beast.

What characters do you like?

This might sound like a funny consideration, but honestly if you are having fun while playing you are more likely to do well in the long run. Are there particular characters you like? Many players will build theme decks around things like Pirates because they like the characters.

What decks are popular in your local scene?

Aggro decks can be really good if you play against a bunch of control decks, and can be really bad if you face down powerful Steelsong opponents. It’s not always possible to accurately read what players are likely to play at your local scene, but if you play locally a lot you might know what you are likely to face and can plan accordingly.

What deck do you have the most practice with?

Last but not least, the most important consideration you should think about when choosing your deck for your Lorcana Tournament is which deck do you have the most practice with? Each and every deck works very differently, and to be successful at a competitive level you need to know your strategy intimately.

If I had to choose between a deck that won a massive tournament and one that I know really well with a less proven track record, I would choose the one I know better every time.

At the end of the day, picking what Lorcana deck to take to your next tournament is about a lot more than just choosing whatever won the latest biggest tournament and about a serious exercise in self reflection. Choosing a deck that has a solid chance in the current meta, and one that you know like the back of your hand is the best way to ensure success.
