Pitch Black has a solid range of both gorgeous and valuable cards. Indeed, even the lesser rarity cards that typically don’t fetch much in other TCG sets are doing well on the secondary card market. Early Pitch Black pull rates
While Pitch Black clearly has gorgeous cards to chase, your odds of pulling them will pretty dramatically impact your experience with this new set.
So what are the pull rates like for Pokémon TCG: Pitch Black?
Below, we’ll be taking a look at preliminary pull rate data derived across 117 packs. While 117 packs isn’t massively statistically significant, it gives us an early idea of what the hit rates for Pitch Black are likely to be. As more packs are opened, I’ll update this guide with additional pull rate information.
Right now, your odds of landing a hit in a Pitch Black pack are as follows:
[Mega] Pokémon ex: 25%
Illustration Rare (IR): 11.1%
Special Illustration Rare (SIR): .9%
Mega Hyper Rare (MHR): N/A (one was pulled in the study but not a conclusive metric)
Shiny/Holo Energy: 6%
Pitch Black Pull Rates
Although the 1/117 pull for the Mega Hyper Rare is pretty impressive, Mega Hyper Rare cards are typically much more rare – typically one in thousands of packs.
Otherwise, Pitch Black appears to map largely to the pull rates we saw in Chaos Rising. Whatever differences currently exist are likely due more to the smaller sample size for this particular pull rate study.

Of course, the Elite Trainer Box is a big pull for most Pokémon TCG fans. This set not only has a gorgeous box and accessories, it also includes the equally intriguing Zarude promo.
Elite Trainer Boxes are almost always a top choice for any Pokémon TCG set. The Pitch Black ETB has the special benefit of featuring Mega Darkrai itself, complete with an epic logo surrounded by ghostly visual effects from the abyss where the mythical Pokémon comes from. Thanks to its haunted Pokémon, Pitch Black ETB will likely be a very popular product – up there among the most popular in the Mega Evolution era.
Next up we have the Pitch Black Booster Box. While the Elite Trainer Box is the best entry level product for player/collectors to buy, the booster box is best for those who want the maximum number of packs for the best price.
Booster bundles are a decent alternative to booster boxes for more casual collectors. While they lack the same kind of pack value you get from a box, they’re considerably cheaper. At the same, they’re also cheaper than ETBs. And while they may lack the frills and fun of an ETB, they have almost as many packs for considerably less.
Most serious collectors will prefer the ETB for the cool add-ons or the booster box for the better value, but Booster Bundles are a fun way to experience Pitch Black on a budget.

This set’s store promos look a little different than past sets: each card will have a unique “What’s your Favorite?” 30th stamp to celebrate Pokémon’s birthday this year. Top Pitch Black decks

The strongest decks are centered around the Hide ‘n’ Sneak mechanic, Mega Darkrai ex, and Mega Excaliber ex.
