Sword Art Online New Original Theatrical Film Finally Announced

Sword Art Online fans have been waiting…and waiting…and waiting for more news on the once promised (years ago) Sword Art Online film and finally it has been confirmed – an all new original theatrical Sword Art Online film really is in the works, with more information coming July, 2026!

While hardcore SAO fans already know that a film was promised years ago, it’s been so long now at this point that many had given up hope. And yet, here it is: official confirmation that the promised new Sword Art Online original anime movie is indeed coming, and we’ll know much more about what that film might be as soon as this July!

The official confirmation came at the very end of Yuna’s First Live Performance – a special event to commemorate the intersection of our timeline with that of the timeline in the first original Sword Art Online theatrical film: Ordinal Scale.

Going into the Yuna’s First Live Performance stream (which occurred very late at 1pm PDT for me), I had thought it might be a poetic way for the Sword Art Online franchise to confirm the upcoming theatrical film right after an event that celebrated the original.

Many other fans were hoping for news getting leaked about an upcoming anime. Indeed, this year has been filled to the brim with SAO content, and the information release itself coincides with the release of the upcoming RPG game Echoes of Aincrad in July, 2026.

Also worth noting is that yet another original film has already been revealed for this year as part of the promotion for Echoes of Aincrad. Called Unanswered//butterfly, this original anime will follow new heroes who encounter a very aggressive Kirito and a mentoring Asuna. While this anime is causing huge excitement within the SAO fanbase, it’s not to be confused with the original motion picture – the news of which was leaked back in 2022.

Even more recently, Sword Art Online Vol. 29 dropped – the latest installment of the main Sword Art Online Light Novel series on which the work is based.

Also, a fun collaboration between Sword Art Online and MahjongSoul has been turning heads online. All of this combined: the new Light Novel, a huge new RPG well on the way, eye-catching collaborations and now a unique new event and official confirmation of the SAO Film is stoking the fire for what can only be described as Sword Art Online’s much anticipated – and eagerly awaited – comeback.

Sword Art Online Author, Kawahara, himself teased that many new announcements would be coming out in 2026 for the franchise. However, I doubt many could have known just how big of a year it would turn out to be for the franchise many in the west had largely thought was dead.

What will the new Sword Art Online movie be about?

Now, the next question is – what will the new SAO movie be about, and when will it come out?

To answer the first question, there are three different possibilities of what the film could be. First, it could be another installment in the Progressive film series – one that follows Asuna and Kirito through their early days in Aincrad. Second, it could be the next chapter in the main storyline – something like Moon Cradle or even the beginning of Unital Ring.

However, it also could be an all new story that’s not from the Light Novels – the same way Ordinal Scale was an original story written for film.

Whatever it is, it will undoubtedly be a fantastic film worth waiting for. And it couldn’t be coming out at a better time: anime films have been doing amazingly at the box office, and the return of a franchise like SAO to the big screen could mean big, big excitement for fans.

As for the second question: my guess is that the film will be coming out sooner than you might think – likely early-to-mid 2027. With more news on the way, here’s to a very, very big comeback for Sword Art Online!
