The Five Strongest Harry Potter Spells, Ranked

strongest Harry Potter spells

What are the strongest Harry Potter spells of them all?

In this list, we’re going to be covering the very strongest spells. While many of these spells would not be the ones that you would think of when it comes to combat, the Harry Potter world is about so much more than dueling, and these spells are the ones that really help move history forward.

Expelliarmus is stronger than what meets the eye

Expelliarmus is so often used by Harry Potter that it’s something of almost a meme spell. Still, you shouldn’t underestimate this spells potency. Unlike other spells of power that are aimed at harming the individual they are cast at, Expelliarmus is a defensive spell. Although it can be used offensively, it is all about disarming your opponent in order to protect yourself. Of course as we see from Harry Potter over and over again, Expelliarmus has much more usefulness than it appears at first. Time and again it has helped the boy who lived fend off one of the most powerful wizards in the world. When combined with the right magical ingredients, it can be an entirely dominating spell.

Imperius Curse

Although many would think of one of the other unforgivable curses for being the strongest, my money is actually on Imperio. Sure, in a combat scenario this won’t hold a candle to the likes of the killing curse. However, life and power are about a lot more than straight up battles, and using the Imperius curse has almost no limits to what it can achieve. You could, for example, cast the Imperius curse on an incredibly powerful political figure to gain an advantage (as happens in the Harry Potter books).

The Patronus Charm is incredibly powerful

There’s a reason that the Patronus charm is so difficult that most wizards will never manage to master it. The fact that Harry Potter is able to use it effectively at an early age just shows how powerful of a wizard he actually is.

Of course, the most obvious use of the Patronus is to fend off Dementors. However, that’s not the limit of its power. It can also be used to send messages, guide loved ones to the truth, or be a light in the dark when all other lights have gone out.

The Unbreakable Vow

There are many examples of spells, curses and charms that are nefariously powerful despite their direct combat focus. The Unbreakable Vow is one of them. In the Harry Potter universe, the Unbreakble Vow has been used for strategic reasons to compel wizards and witches to follow through on actions that have vastly altered the course of history. Two examples come readily to mind – those being the killing of Albus Dumbledore by Severus Snape and the binding of Dumbledore and Grindelwald.

This is certainly a strategic spell that it takes an incredible intelligence to leverage affectively. But the greatest geniuses can use it to overcome the most powerful of forces.

Love is the most powerful form of magic

There are so many cool spells that wizards use throughout the Harry Potter books and films that it can be easy to forget the single most fundamental form of magic that trumps all others – that magic is love.

Wielders of this strange form of magic are able to conquer over all others, even the legendary killing curse. It was powerful love magic that saved Harry from Voldemort originally, and the same magic that continued to protect him throughout his life, mixing with his ordinary magic to help Harry display some of the greatest feats of magic in wizarding history.
